One Proposed Ballot Measure for Atlanta

Stop “Cop City”

Officially called the “Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.”

Not Yet on Ballot

This is a city ballot initiative and there is no Ballotpedia page.

Current status: Double the necessary signatures were turned in September 11, 2023, but legal wrangling with the city government is not yet concluded.

If constructed, Cop City would be one of the largest militarized police training centers in the United States. Plans include military-grade training facilities, a mock city in which to practice urban warfare, and dozens of shooting ranges.

More information from campaign organizers here.

Training that sees police work as a form of war will put everyone in greater danger. That includes the police officers themselves.

War practice uses poor reasoning. The idea is that killing human beings is necessary to solve problems. This is not only morally wrong, but inaccurate: violence is short-sighted and dangerous.

Community policing, on the other hand, increases public safety by treating everyone involved as human beings with value. Local programs around the U.S. are proving successful.
